30 Andover Road (formerly 4, Tivoli Buildings)
4, Tivoli Buildings, of the four properties in this row, was the longest to retain its original use. It was a butchers shop from about 1870, apart from a short period in the mid 1970s-1980s, until 2022. The first butcher was J Penstone, who had previously traded in Tivoli Street. He was followed by R Challis and Frank Waghorne, whose family had been butchers in the High Street.
The property was owned by Henry Davies, the newspaper proprietor, who died in 1890. His daughter Elizabeth eventually sold the premises to Frank Waghorne in 1921. A year after his death in 1943 the butchers business was acquired by S Gilder and it continued under his ownership until 1972.
