57 Great Norwood Street
In 1936 Mr Richard Edward Jones, a second hand furniture dealer, and his wife Gertrude lived here. Mr Jones was born in Llanidloes, in Montgomeryshire, in about 1875. The couple were married at Salem Baptist church in Cheltenham in 1898 and celebrated their Golden Wedding here in 1948.
The Jones’ were here until about 1950, when New Rubber Floors took over these premises as their showroom. The proprietor of this company was Mr A.E. Garland. They advertised “30 beautiful mottled colours” and that their flooring would “last a lifetime”.
By 1962 the trade had changed to Turf Accountant, taking bets on sporting events such as horse-racing, run by another family member, Brian Garland. In 1975 this business was in the hands of R. Morris & Co., Turf Accountants.
In the later part of the 20th and early 21st centuries this shop has hosted beauticians and hairdressers, starting with Leckhampton Health & Beauty, then Graeme Wright and more recently Kirsty McAdam.
