12 Suffolk Road (formerly 6 Northwick Terrace)

In 1851 this property was occupied by Sarah Purnell an ‘annuitant’, or pensioner, and it may have been solely in residential use. By 1852 the property was in commercial occupancy when a milliner called E. Purnell, who was presumably related to Sarah, was here.

The trade then changed, when between 1881 and 1892 a greengrocer called C. Musty set up in business, eventually extending his remit to include the sale of confectionery. He must have sold his business soon after, as by 1900 Mr F.J. Hobbs ran a confectionery shop here.

In about 1906 the trade changed again, when the tailor Mr F. Hamlin from next door took over these premises. He was succeeded by a tailor called Thomas Daniel Evans in about 1926 and the building was known as Claverton House. In common with many of the traders in the vicinity Mr Evans relied heavily upon his business with Cheltenham College.

The tailor’s shop continued here until at least 1965, when it was being operated by Mrs C.E.A. Evans, but they had gone by 1970.

By 1975 W.R. Cambridge & Sons, were here as antique dealers. In the early years of the 21st century this became a popular Thai restaurant called The Siam Smile.
